It's the Fat Boys... that's who you can blame for DJ SpectR (a.k.a. spectwon, a.k.a SpectR Vorheez). It's the husky disco three that introduced SpectR to the love of his life, hip hop. Well, it's probably not the Fat Boys, but who is a 4 year old more likely to remember?? Run-DMC, Kurtis Blow, or the gimmick heavy Fat Boys(pun semi-intended).
In fact, he remembers his mom giving him a whooping way back when for trying to scratch one of their records. And yes, SpectR's mom had a Fat Boys record when he was a wee man. She also deserves some of the blame.
Back then, she was an aerobics instructor who would create mixes for her routines. SpectR remembers music blaring from a room which she locked herself in to record her mixes. It would be at least a decade between the time when she stopped and he would lock himself in a room and do the same thing.
DJ SpectR originally hailed from the Tri-Cities, WA, then moved to Medford for the later half of his childhood. Finally came to Klamath is 1999 right out of high school to study Software Engineering at Oregon Tech.
Still the hip hop fiend in college, friends impressed with SpectR's knowledge of hip hop, particularly his knowledge of artists that "you've never heard of but are really really good," said that he should sign up to be DJ at KTEC, Oregon Tech's college station. Terrified, he was reluctant to do it at first, until the constant hounding from his friends to do it finally got to him. What resulted was A) a five year stint doing an underground hip hop show called "The Enjoy Mute Show" (which could be translated to "Enjoy" = appreciate & "Mute" = underground hip hop), B) the adoption of his "SpectR" moniker, C) him becoming the manager of the station, and D) a friend hooking him up with a job with Hot 102.9.
By the way, at the same time he first started out as a college radio DJ, he got his first turntables and mixer to become a real DJ of the wicky wick variety. Well, that is actually ONE turntable since he was prematurely let go from a summer job while he was first saving up for them. And what can a DJ do with just ONE turntable??? Allot of scratching, that's what. Which SpectR first made his name in the basin for, performing for free at various friends parties and clubs.
Several years into college, SpectR was still told himself lies about wanting being an Engineer (first Software, which he then dropped after 2 years to do Electronics) until one of his professors, who heard him working for both KTEC and Hot 102.9, said SpectR needed to choose between radio and engineering because the workload would simply be too heavy for both. SpectR made his choice, which left the professor shocked with the decision.
SpectR is still finishing up a degree part time, which now is in Communications (yeah, he switched majors yet again), while now DJing full time with Hot 102.9. Hear him weekdays from 10am to 3pm.
